Rail Apprenticeships

Want to earn, learn and launch a career with a major rail business? If so, take a look at the programmes on offer at Great Western Railway (GWR), South Western Railway (SWR) and TransPennine Express (TPE).

Whichever programme you choose, you’ll work in key areas of the business, learning from industry experts. You’ll receive intensive, on-the-job training, bespoke development sessions and the chance to study for a nationally recognised standard.

Great Western Railway

Great Western Railway carries 1.5 million passengers every week on 9,000 services, calling at 276 stations. And it’s the only UK rail company to operate High Speed intercity, commuter and sleeper services. That makes Great Western Railway the perfect place to develop your knowledge of the rail industry, as well as your skills and experience. So what Apprenticeship programmes are on offer at the moment?

Engineering Apprenticeship
  • 4 year Level 3 Engineering technician Passenger transport
  • Opportunity to undertake Duke of Edinburgh Business gold
  • Opportunity to progress to Engineering HNC
Operations Apprenticeship
  • 18-month programme
  • Level 2 Passenger Transport Operations
  • Certificate of Higher Education in Railway Operations
  • Duke of Edinburgh Business Gold Award
  • You must be willing to achieve Functional Skills level 1 (GCSE grade C) if you don’t have this already
Aspire Management Apprenticeship
  • 18-month programme
  • Chartered Management Institute level 5 standards
  • On-the-job training with management responsibilities
  • Intensive management training

South Western Railway

South Western Railway keeps the South Coast connected. To make sure customers arrive safely and on time, the business needs fresh talent across a range of areas. Working with high quality local training providers including Fareham College (rated ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED), Nescot, University of Portsmouth and Qualitrain. South Western Railway offers Apprenticeships in:

TransPennine Express

Want to earn, learn and launch a career at TransPennine Express? Good news: you’ll be joining a business that’s undergoing an incredible transformation. To connect communities, people and cities, we’re investing over £500m in the TransPennine Express franchise. It will bring faster, easier journeys and a step change in rail services to create an intercity of the North.

On these two-year Apprenticeships, you’ll have a unique insight into a business where improvements are coming thick and fast: free Wi-Fi at all 19 stations; a brand new on-board entertainment system and three fleets of shiny new, state-of-the-art trains – and that’s only the start. Whichever Apprenticeship programme you join, you’ll be right at the heart of the business, learning from industry experts, enjoying on-the-job training and studying for a nationally recognised standard.
