GWR Engineering Apprentice

We’re changing the way people think about train travel, enabling our teams to make it a great experience for our customers. Together, we will restore the railways as a very special way to travel – friendly, relaxing, fast, efficient, and fun.

As an Engineering Apprentice at GWR, you'll train and learn, while you earn everything from how to service, repair and react to faults reported during operations of the GWR fleet with the aim of becoming our Engineers of the future.

During the Apprenticeship, you will study a level 3 qualification in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering with an opportunity to progress to an HNC based on progression through the apprenticeship. You'll also have your very own mentor to guide and support you through your journey. You won't be on your own - we'll support you every step of the way.

Alongside the training at the depot, you’ll attend college to work towards the required Engineering qualification. You’ll also be given the opportunity to enrol on the Duke of Edinburgh Business gold scheme in year 2 of your apprenticeship.

Whilst we are finalising the locations for the Engineering Apprentice cohort 2023, the locations our Engineering Apprentices have previously been placed are Reading, Bristol, Exeter, and Plymouth.

Essentially, you must be over 16 years of age, live within one hour of your chosen location, and have achieved or predicted 5 x GCSE's (or equivalent) Grade 4 or above including Maths, English, and Science, plus two other subjects. ICT would be desirable. You’ll have good numerical, verbal, and written communication skills.

GWR is place where you can truly be your unique self, thrive and be part of an awesome family.

For the first 2 years of the apprenticeship, you will work day shifts between 07:00 and 20:00, Monday through Saturday, with a rest day and study time during this period.

For year 3 & 4 you will follow a 24/7 shift pattern.
