About the role
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate previous experience managing a large engineering team.
As the flagship depot for First Bus, here are a few things you should know about the depot:
- 100% renewable energy powers First Bus Caledonia, which is the UK's biggest bus depot.
- This state-of-the-art green facility utilises rainwater harvesting to clean the buses and photovoltaics to power the buildings.
- The depot also operates one of the largest electric vehicle bus fleets in Europe, and the supporting charging infrastructure.
We are looking for an extremely dynamic Engineering Manager who will drive continuous improvement of the engineering function. You will be responsible for maximising productivity, fleet reliability, availability, and presentation, whilst maintaining our high level of Health, Safety and Environmental standards.
You'll coach, develop, and inspire everyone in your team to perform at their best every day. You'll guide by example.

Key Responsibilities
- Responsibility for supporting engineering workshop managers and supervisors and assisting them in controlling labour and material costs in line with the engineering budget. This will be facilitated through running the Daily Spend and Repair Cost analysis reports.
- Work with the local stores manager to target and reduce stock holding levels.
- Responsibility for advising/supporting workshop manager/supervisors in their overall responsibility for the organisation and control of any sub-contracted engineering work and all contractors or third parties who may be working on site.
- Support workshop managers/supervisors to maintain full establishment levels for both skilled and semi-skilled staff, with a positive approach to diversity and inclusion.
- To have daily team briefings with all supervisory staff to discuss workshop performance against predefined targets.
- Manage workshop managers and supervisors to maximise staff productivity through effective two-way communications, empowering supervisors to deliver targets, encouraging self- development and setting clear and measurable individual performance targets.
- To carry out skills assessments of all Engineering Workshop Managers/supervisors and subsequently develop and deliver training and development plans for each individual member of staff.
- To ensure that the highest level of fleet reliability and maintainability is achieved, whilst being fully compliant to our licence obligations.
- Monitor and support apprentices to ensure that the training and development program is adhered to.
Skills & experience.
We're looking for an exceptional people manager with a suitable engineering qualification and at least three years' senior management experience.
You'll have:
- Recognised engineering qualifications, relative to the responsibilities and seniority of the role.
- Good working knowledge of electronic engineering management systems and capacity planning.
- Experience on working on lean engineering principles and systems.
- Experience in the bus industry preferred but not essential.
- Hold a current transport manager CPC or be willing to take additional training to attain this qualification.
- To undergo formal development, assessment, attainment and retention of a recognised engineering and management qualification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Must be in the possession of a full driving licence.
- It would be advantageous to be a member of a professional body such as IRTE, SOE.
