Engineering Trainer

Position Title:        Engineering Trainer        

Reports to:            Engineering Training Manager 

Location:               Remote / Hybrid working, with regular travel

 Position Summary

 The role will report to the Engineering Training Manager, as part of the Technical & Training team within Central Engineering function, responsible for ensuring all aspects of required engineering training needs are identified and delivered in line with the agreed training programme.

The role holder will monitor, and track engineering competency ensuring this is maintained and sustained considering future technologies and the business needs. They will drive the standard in diagnostics and repairs by being a point of contact to support in-depth fault diagnoses and repair.

To support with technical advice and carry out vehicle inspection to provide a diagnosis, maintenance, and repair, in accordance with First Bus approved technical procedures keeping vehicles in optimum working condition

To maintain the highest standards of safety, meeting all legislative and corporate standards, and to ensure the skills and the knowledge of engineering workshop staff are kept up to date, by providing supervision, training, and guidance, and ensuring that technical information is distributed and understood.  This role will not cover training related to leadership development attributes, acumen, or driver training, but will be required to signpost training needs in these areas, coach and display appropriate leadership behaviours.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • To maintain the highest standards of safety, meeting all legislative and corporate standards
  • Create and maintain a positive and professional learning environment
  • Manage the design, delivery and continuous improvement of training programs.
  • Utilise a variety of the training methodologies, techniques, concepts, learning tools, and practices to ensure maximum effectiveness of training programs
  • Conduct specific training needs assessments to support the design, development, and delivery of training programs
  • To ensure the skills and the knowledge of engineering workshop staff and apprentices are kept up to date
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

 Skills, Experience and Leadership behaviours required

  • Training experience – proficient in training methodologies and soft skills (communication skills, critical thinking, time management, team building, etc.)
  • Able to deliver, project and motivate trainees through effective training methodologies both in group and individual classroom dynamics
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail/level of quality, communication (written and verbal)
  • Be proficient in the use of diagnostic equipment including but not limited to Jaltest, Cummins Insight, Volvo Tech-tool, Actia, Kibes, Xentry
  • Be proficient in the use of electrical diagnostic equipment including oscilloscopes and multimeters
  • Hold or be working towards a recognised assessing qualification
  • Hold or be working towards an irtec master-tech accreditation
  • Hold or be working towards an irtec vehicle inspection accreditation
  • The ability to support with complex fault diagnoses on vehicles within our fleet
  • Computer literate with knowledge of MS office and web-based systems
  • High energy, enthusiastic, motivational training style
  • Demonstrates effective listening and questioning skills

Key Stakeholders

 Internally: Head of Engineering Excellence, Head of Technical & Training, Engineering Directors, Head of Engineering, Depot Engineering Management and Health & Safety, Learning and Development team.

Externally: IMI, DVSA and external service providers / suppliers.

KPI's

  • To ensure that all relevant assessment paperwork is completed to the correct standard within the timescales agreed with the awarding body (The IMI & SOE)
  • To ensure that all accredited training is delivered inline with the awarding bodies policies and procedures and meets First Bus standards as defined by the Engineering Training Manager
  • To deliver training and or assessments to the awarding bodies standard, as required by the business
  • To ensure a minimum of 30 hours continuous professional development is completed annually
