As a result of an exciting change programme, a fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Head of Project Delivery to lead a team of Project Managers and a Project Coordinator to successfully deliver a programme of interventions and enhancements across the GWR Network. These will drive business growth, delight our customers, and support our colleagues.

What's the job?

Leading the Project Delivery team, you will drive our project delivery, ensuring that projects are managed consistently and delivered to time and budget. You'll oversee project governance and escalation of project finances, risks and issues. You'll bring with you your experience of managing Programmes of work along with a thorough understanding of Commercial, Contractual and Project Management principles.

Besides managing a capital expenditure budget, you'll coach, mentor, support and develop your team with a focus on commercial acumen and contractual agreement.

In addition to the wider Business and Community Development Team, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to deliver outputs that meet our commitments to the Department for Transport and third-party funders as well as supporting the delivery of new stations and enhancement projects delivered by Network Rail and third parties.

What will I be doing?

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Programme Management; driving the consistent delivery of a large portfolio of projects to meet budget and timescales obligations, ensuring delivery of business requirements and compliance with railway and third-party approval and consents processes
  • To embed a pre-emptive approach to risk and issue management
  • To manage, lead and support a team of Project Managers and a Project Coordinator
  • Ensure accurate project programmes are developed and maintained and variances identified and reported
  • Manage project finance reports in conjunction with the GWR finance team, monitoring expenditure and maintaining budget processes
  • Report project progress at project boards and steering groups
  • Manage external consultants and contractors
  • Adhering to, developing and improving property project governance
  • To engage GWR functional leads from across the business, including Operations, Train Planning, Asset Management and the Safety team to support delivery
  • Developing and maintaining deep and trusted relationships with Network Rail, GWR's other partners and third-party funders
  • Ensure that GWR meet the obligations and commitments made to third-parties
  • Co-operate with the company to enable it to meet all legal obligations relating to health and safety

What are you looking for?

You'll need to be:

  • Able to manage a large portfolio of projects, driving consistency in approach and effectively monitoring progress
  • Able to drive project delivery efficiently, working within constraints to meet challenging timescales
  • A consummate professional with excellent communicating skills; the agility and adaptability to communicate effectively with customers, team members, internal and external stakeholders and third parties
  • Someone who can motivate and lead a dynamic team, offering coaching and development where appropriate
  • Able to work with people across functions and departments and external parties
  • A problem solver who enjoys effective and creative solutions without compromising on quality and assurance
  • A resilient and skilled negotiator who can bring different parties and views together to help create workable solutions

What do I need to have?

  • Extensive experience of programme management and project delivery
  • A solid understanding of project management methodologies
  • Excellent people management experience
  • Experience of negotiating and contracting with contractors
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen and negotiation
  • Ability to lead, develop and coach individuals

What else do I need to know?

The team is based in our headquarters in Swindon but you will be required to travel across the GWR network.  Our offices are a short walk from Swindon station. 

Salary up to £80,000.
